Pope Brass Band

At Pope, we currently have one brass band, which is led by Ms. Kay Fairchild. Brass Band is a Spring Ensemble, and we rehearse once a week for 2 hours. Brass Band consists of 2 rows of trumpets, with an e flat player, a flugel horn and repiano player, a solo eflat horn player and 1st and 2nd horns, tubas, euphoniums, trombones and percussion. We play traditional brass band music, where most instruments have to transpose into their key. It is very challenging but a lot of fun.We also have a few of Kay's students come in and play their insturments with us, so not only do we get to play great music, but we get to meet new people too :)

What exactly is Brass Band and why is it so popular here at Pope?

Brass Band is a bunch of brass players who get together to play either pieces designed specifically for brass bands or arrangements of a variety of different works. At Pope, Brass Band is an extracurricular activity that is purely on a volunteer basis. Each band reherses once a week(with a couple Saturday rehersals) for 2 hours. The breakdown of the insturmentation in brass band is as follows:

1-2 Eb Trumpets, 1 repiano trumpet, 1 flugal horn, 8-9 trumpets(cornets), 6 horns, 3-4 euphoniums, 3-4 trombones, 4 tubas, and various percussionists.

Brass Band originated in Great Britian and some of the insturments they use are different than the ones we use. For example, they use cornets instead of trumpets and Eb alto horns instead of the ones we use - F horns. In some cases, we need to transpose into our key, but it's easy to get the hang of after awhile.

Brass Band is so popular here because not only do we love playing the music we reherse, but we have a lot of fun. It's a chance to hang out with and get to know the people in the brass section and sometimes, meet new people. Our brass section has grown and developed these past couple of years TREMENDOUSLY because we are able to develop our skills as brass players while receiving instruction from 2 wonderful brass players. None of this could be possible without them, and we truely appreciate everything that they do.

     Recent Brass Band News

The Pope Brass Band had their spring concert Monday, May 1st, with Dodgen's Trumpet

Ensemble, Low Brass Ensemble, and Brass Ensemble starting off the concert. It went very

well, and we plan to have Brass Band next year and encourage everyone who's

 interested to try out.
